ABT ANNOUNCES CHANGE TO APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Beginning with applications received for the 2008 examination, the American Board of Toxicology will have a new process. There will be two separate fees - an eligibility determination fee and an examination fee. Currently, applicants pay one fee of $425. If found eligible, this fee covers two years of eligibility and examinations. The Board has decided that candidates will pay an initial fee of $225 to have eligibility determined. Eligibility approvals will be for a period of three years. During each year the candidate decides to sit for the examination, a non-refundable $200 examination fee will be due. The policy for passing the examination is as follows: if a candidate passes two of the three parts, the remaining part may be attempted during the remaining years of current eligibility. The remaining part must be passed on the next examination attempt. If the candidate does not pass the remaining part in the next examination attempt, all three parts must be repeated in the remaining year of eligibility or in the next eligibility period for which the candidate may apply. Credit for passed portions of the examination will only be applied to the period of eligibility in which they were obtained.
With the added year of eligibility, the Board has eliminated the eligibility extension policy. The only time eligibility extensions will be granted is during the third year of eligibility, and only in extremely limited circumstances.
