Since the transition to the electronic administration of the ABT examination at testing centers throughout the world in 2021, ABT has experienced tremendous growth. More applications were received in 2025 than any other year during the 45 years the exam has been offered. The increase in international applicants has been remarkable, accounting for almost half of all applications received in 2025.
The ABT Board of Directors is continually reviewing policies and procedures, streamlining and refining as needed to ensure the value of the DABT credential remains strong and consistent while adhering to best practices in the credentialing industry. As a result, the following is a summary of changes beginning with the 2026 examination. Details on all changes can be found in the 2026 Candidate Handbook.
Degree Verification
The ABT will only accept certified copies of transcripts and degree certificates sent to us directly from the granting institution. We are unable to accept notarized, attested and/or candidate-prepared documents. If a school does not provide certified copies directly, candidates are required to have their degrees and transcripts verified by our primary source verification provider, International Evaluation Providers (IEE.)
Testing Center Options
The ABT examination will only be offered at Pearson VUE-owned sites and those designated at PVTCSelect, approximately 800 sites worldwide. This change has been deemed necessary due to differing security policies between these and the many other third-party sites that contract with Pearson VUE. It is possible candidates may have to travel to take the examination, perhaps to another country. NOTE: Until Pearson updates the ABT page on their site to include a tab called Seat Availability, the site listings are not accurate. This should be updated by early March.
Application Withdrawal Refund
For candidates who withdraw their application by the June 3 deadline, the refund amount has changed from $300 to $200.
Please utilize the Candidate Handbook for all information regarding applications, eligibility, and exam format and administration.
